Divine Red Wine
While consumption of grapes should be in moderation due to their high sugar content, once you turn those grapes into wine, they become a valuable weapon of your body’s arsenal against illness. Not just any wine, however. Only red wine has the benefits that we will describe below.
Red wine is high in antioxidants that benefit heart health, circulation and reduce the risk of many cancers. One of the main antioxidants which provides exceptional health benefits is called Resveratrol. While all grapes have antioxidants found in their skin and seeds, only the processes used in red wine production allow for a fermentation of the skins and seeds which highly increases the levels of Resveratrol. Unfortunately, these items are removed early in the process of making white wine.
Likewise, red wine has significantly less residual sugar. While sugar levels are not required to be posted on bottles in the United States, it is widely known that reds have very low amounts of sugar. White wines have markedly more and increase with the sweetness of the wine.
Countless studies have shown that one glass of red wine per day helps the body to fight different types of cancers because the antioxidants attack foreign invaders which try to destroy healthy cells. One of the antioxidants in red wine is also thought to help prevent lung cancer. Additionally, these chemicals in red wine have been shown to raise the levels of good cholesterol (HDL) and to lower bad cholesterol (LDL). They also act as a blood thinner. The end result is increased circulation and aid in preventing heart disease, blood clots and strokes.
Studies have shown that cultures whose people consume red wine on a regular basis have lower incidents of heart disease, such as the French diet and those of other Mediterranean countries. Ironically, this hold true regardless of the fact that the French eat foods that are extremely high in fat.
Yet another benefit of red wine is that it has been shown to lower the risk of food born illnesses from bacteria such as Salmonella, Listeria Monocytogenes and E-Coli.
Moderation. As with all things, moderation is key. While 1-2 glasses of red wine per day has many benefits, more than that can be harmful by way of weight gain, liver damage, etc. Experts suggest one five-ounce glass per day for women and two for men. So enjoy a Cabernet, a Pinot Noir or a Merlot today!
